Don holding a smallmouth bass at Dog Lake

About the Fisherman

My name’s Don. I’ve been fishing Ontario’s lakes since I was old enough to hold a rod. This site is a quiet corner of the internet where I share what I know — fishing stories, lake info, and things I’ve picked up over the years.

No sponsors, no clickbait. Just honest fishing knowledge from someone who’s been at it a while.

Where It All Started

Don’s dad with a massive pike at Doe Lake — black and white

My dad first took me to Doe Lake in Katrine when I was a kid. That’s where I caught my first pike, learned to read the water, and fell in love with fishing.

He knew every bay and point on that lake. He taught me patience — that fishing isn’t just about the catch, it’s about being out there.

The early mornings, the quiet water, the time spent together. Those lessons stuck with me for life.

Passing It On

Devin was four years old the first time I put a rod in his hands. We were at Pioneer Tower in Kitchener, fishing the Grand River. He landed a 15-pound carp — and he was so proud we had to drive straight to my dad’s place to show him.

Years later, I started taking him up to Dog Lake — a whole different kind of fishing. That grin? Five minutes into our 2023 trip. First day, first fish, caught trolling before we even got settled. My dad never made it up to Dog Lake, but had he seen it, he’d have gone back year after year. Doe Lake was his water. Dog Lake is ours. Different lakes, same thing being passed down.
